This course is designed for participants who have a basic understanding of the outputs and outcomes of their project and want to move on to collect, analyse, present and use monitoring and evaluation information on these.

•wondering which tools to use to collect data
•new to quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis techniques
•considering how best to communicate your findings in an interesting, appealing and useful way.

Through group work, discussion, presentations and case examples, participants will explore a range of information collection tools, carry out analysis of data using qualitative and quantitative research techniques and look at ways to present information in an engaging and useful way.

 

Course aims

By the end of this course you will:

  • better understand the basic differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches to research and evaluation
  • be clearer about what information needs to be collected, by whom and from whom, and presented to whom, how and when
  • know more about the pros and cons of using interviews, focus groups and questionnaires
  • have increased knowledge of participatory, creative and visual information collection techniques
  • be able to undertake simple analysis of quantitative and qualitative data including producing descriptive statistics (eg, frequencies and averages) and carrying out thematic content analysis
  • be clearer about what information to present, when, to whom and how
  • have increased understanding of how to make effective recommendations
  • know how to structure and present an evaluation report
  • explore ways to get your evaluation findings used both internally and externally.
