Maybe I am hard hearted but I don't respond to direct marketing. I get lots of postal and email 'asks' (no SMS yet) which I don't even read let alone take action as a result of it.
In our world of information overload, does direct marketing ever really get through to people? Is it worth doing it or are we just adding to the piles of junk mail and spam?

Hi john, some charities raise LOTS of money from direct mail. You (and others reading) may be interested in a Charity Talk which is coming up next year where a small charity, Islamic Aid - starting from zero in year 2,000 and only £6,000 to invest - have raised over £12 MILLION! Their Exec Chair Mahmood Hassan is presenting. You can get details of Charity Talks on www.cass.city.ac.uk/cce
What your note prompts in me is a worry that direct mail fundraisers are sitting on a time bomb of very high cost ratios - that would just not be understood or accepted by you or other small donors
