Subject: Funding for/donations of computers and printers for volunteer use

 

Just wondering if anyone out there can suggest potential corporate donors and/or GMTs to donate or grant funds to buy computers and printers for volunteer use? Have looked at the major computer manufacturers, but it seems that most only make in-kind donations to employee nominated causes...

Hi there, if you are a small London-based organisation, Lexmark have a competition to give away printers, deadline 30 Nov.

You might also like to try some of the IT recycling organisations - such as Computers for Charities.

The best I know is http://www.computeraid.org/ Thouhh perhaps this wouldn't help you as I think they mostly donate to third world organisations.

Makeadifference's suggestion is worth following up as Computeraid do sometimes give computers to charities in this country provided the need is proven and the numbers are not high. At the moment they have some computers but they are short of monitors. Best of luck!

BT are running a scheme called BT Community Connections - you could try this too.

Hallo to you ALL.My names are Moses okoth and i come from Kenya.i must say that with the advancement in ICT....Africa is still one of those countries that lags behind and has NOT fully embraced ICT.I basically work in the rural parts of Kenya and sadly children in this part of the world still DONT even know what a monitor is.....forget that some of them have never seen a monitor.I am looking for ways and means unto how i could be able to get a few second hand computers or laptops.There is the notion that whenever Africans seek for help its always aid that we want and that we cannot be able to fend for ourselves on the contrary i feel that theres is alot of biase and that there should be communication before people jump to conclusions.I do hope that we can be able to synergies and come up with strategies to really become a global Village.Any kind of Help or suggestions are highly appareciated!Mo! 

 

Hi Moses, I agree with you that we in Europe often jump to the wrong conclusions - I have recently experienced it myself. But I may be able to help you on your practical request for computers. Hi Ian...sorry for the long quite silence.....well i must first say happy New year to all of you...thank you to you all.

Ian i did make an application from the Computer AID Organisation and we have to set-backs here...take this as the scenario.....i work in Siaya and thats 10 hours from the capital city Nairobi......and then you make another 3 hours to where we have a well established resource center that caters for people with disabilities,Women,Children and the youth.Great idea.novel idea and its doing and helping people so so much.....those who have no it knowledge have been coming and wqe have been talking and training th0ose who want....Computer AID wants some money to make sure that the computers are shipped....i think 45 pounds...Apart from that these are people who dont basically work and they dont habve a source of income.....then we must have a refree from the UK thats the other thing from there i can be able to give information where need be.Thank you so much for the concern.WEditor we did fill out for the computer comp[etion BUT i think due to the fact that we couldnt get lots of votes since we tried it for a school in Kenya it didnt work.....but ok we are still keeping our fingers crossed that something will come up!Thanks alot.
