There has, understandably, been a great deal of discussion and speculation across the sector about the likely impact of the recession on giving - from individuals through to support from corporate partnerships, trusts and foundations.

It would be interesting to hear:

  • Whether your organisation has noticed a downturn in income in any areas, when benchmarked against previous years, and - if so - where and what that has been?
  • Whether you have put any different or new strategies in place to combat the effects of the recession - whether or not you have yet felt any impact on giving - and what these are?
  • What you expect the challenges will be for your organisation over the next 12-18 months as a result of the economic downturn?
I would like to see some more meaningful research and shared results across the sector to help everyone get a handle on what the impact on giving really is, as opposed to what people expect it might

be, as this could help organisations make vital decisions based on knowledge, rather than speculation.  It would be great if we could start by sharing insights in this forum, to benefit all.

There has been some conversation captured in the TechSoup forums about this topic.  You can read what others are saying in the Nonprofits Affected by Financial Crisis topic.

Ken Berger, President & CEO of Charity Navigator, posted some great advice to charities in hard times.  His excellent post concludes with this message:

"My concluding advice to the charity leaders was that they will play a pivotal role in how their agency will fare in these hard economic times. In spite of the challenges and the fear of how bad things will get, they must be able to instill hope, vision and passion about the value of the charity's work."
