Hi guys,

I have taken on a role as an events and fundraising co-ordinator in a drama show for kids in glasgow that speak and learn the Gaelic language.

This is our second year running and due to severe lack of funds last year I have been given the role to raise some money for costumes, hall, props ect.

We are a small group of 15 - 20 and so far I have thought of making christmas cards and selling them in the kids school fete, I also know that some pople do bag packing at supermarkets and thought we could try out that.

Im not too sure how to get these things up and running though, for example I wouldn't know where to get the cheapest products for making cards and how much I would need to sell them for.

I could use any help out there so please get in touch.

Thanks from Casan Ceolach (our drama group)

Hi Rachel

Depending on where the activities are taking place and the nature of the children attending, you may be able to consider applying for small grant funding. For example you might want to see whether you might be eligible for Awards for All funding (part of the Lottery) or the Children in Need small grants programme:

http://www.awardsforall.org.uk/scotland/index.html

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/grants/smallgrants.shtml

There may also be local trusts who may be interested in funding your work.  To search the register see http://www.oscr.org.uk - for example I advanced searched on Gaelic in the charity objects and the results included the Gaelic Language Promotion Trust which funds the teaching and use of the language and arts which may be worth looking in to.

These are probably longer-term options as it will take time to apply and get a decision.  In the meantime, you might find it useful to look at the website http://www.how2fundraise.org/ for ideas about fundraising and how to get started

Good luck!

Tania

When we started the South Devon Players up, we were in pretty much the same position, and have since found various methods, I wrote this article some time ago for this site about how to raise funds and keep costs down.

I am back today looking into the recycling of printer ink cartridges as well, for fundraising.

Dear Rthoms32

I have a strong affinity with the arts and creativity, and I wish you all the best with your challenge. In our office, we decided to look at your challenge and put it through a Creative Problem Solving process to see what comes out. With limited information, it's very difficult to analyse the situation so you will forgive us if we have missed the point.

We have come up with an idea that you might be able to sell cards and nurture further funding and we believe it can be done on a low budget. We propose that you grab a good quality camera and take some great pictures of the children in production. If you can make cards with the children on it with a christmasy feeling all the more better. Then sell the cards with a kind message inside which gets the buyer to view a 'You tube' video. It doesn't have to be professional but get the children to express their thanks for buying the card. At the end of the video comes the appeal for donations. If you can really pull at the heart strings, we believe that christmas card buyers can turn into large gifts. You will need to set up a justgiving page or text giving facility.

The key to this is to get the purchasers to feel that they are contributing to a costume or prop as if its a xmas present, and what could be more inviting for someone to purchase some tickets to watch the children in their next production (with the costume or prop that they have just purchased). The children could even thank the donor at the end of the show.

What you are doing is nurturing a relationship with the christmas card buyer into a long term relationship which will grow and grow with the right offers.

Our minds often leave our senses especially on a Friday afternoon but as a Creative Problem Solving Facilitator and experienced fundraiser, I'm addicted.

Hope this helps. Forgive the speed typing and I'm sure many typos.

Good idea, but in these days you will need to consider the issues of child protection (can be a bit of a minefield), you will need to make certain that you have written permission from the parents/ gaurdians of each child in order to do something like that :)
