The Association of Charity Shops are probably the best place to get advice on this (and any other questions that arise as you go forward).
Good luck with your ventureThis comment was last edited on Feb 12, 2010
There are both VAT and rates relief implications for charity shops of
entering into 50:50 partnerships, and you should seek separate expert and legal
advice.
One of the tests for charity shops to gain 80% mandatory rates
relief is that they sell "wholly or mainly" donated goods. Goods sold in 50:50
arrangements are not likely to be treated as donated goods, and this may have
an impact on your eligibility for rates relief.
Equally, the zero rating
for VAT that charity shops enjoy is on sales of donated, second hand goods. This
zero rating is not likely to apply to 50:50 goods.
I suggest you visit the HMRC website for more on VAT, rates and tax in general.
