We have an idea for employment of people who normally are state welfare recipients because of the nature of their being marginalised by previous incarceration and or  institutionalisation or are in recovery from addiction to alcohol & drugs.

We want to have a co-op where we run a scrap and junk collection agency  where we pick up people's unwanted junk from their homes /yards/ or its arranged they leave it on the street at a certain time and we will pick it up  . We plan to use the proceeds (from selling donated goods  to scrapyards and on the internet  ;)  to pay our co-op members /employees . Could we register as a sort of charity shop under New Zealand law? or if you cannot answer that , Do you as KNOWHOW NONPROFIT,  have  any projects you know in the UK that are similar and working successfully within the law? Please could you put me in touch with them . Thanking you

Hi there Songwriter girl,

Whilst I was researching, I found a co op set up in Brighton and Hove called Magpie Recycling, they offer several recycling services in their area and I found them very inspirational, check them out. I cannot comment on laws in New Zealand, but in the UK we are required to hold a waste carrier licence and provide a waste transfer note for every collection, hope this helps.

Best of luck with your venture, it sounds very worth while.
