What are organisations on KnowHow?

Organisations are groups of users that all belong to the same organisation. This could be for a small local group or a large organisation that operates all over the world. Membership of an organisation is controlled by the organisation’s managers (more on that later).

We’re careful to try an avoid multiple entries for the same organisation so we use postcodes as the primary way to differentiate groups. This also allows large organisations to create several groups based on their location.

Setting up an organisation

  1. Go to your dashboard (by logging in and clicking on your name in the top right hand corner of the screen).
  2. Under ‘My organisations’ select ‘Find an organisation’
  3. Enter the postcode or your organisation and click the ‘search’ button
  4. If your organisation appears select it by clicking on the radio button and then clicking on the ‘join’ button
  5. If your organisation isn’t already in our database then you will see is an option to select ‘New Organisation’. Click on the radio button.
  6. Fill in the form, adding a name, website URL, email address and post address (optional) and click the ‘create’ button.

Once you have created your organisation’s entry you will be taken to it. It is also available via you dashboard.

If you create an organisation you will automatically become a manager for it. This means you have the authority to accept or reject membership applications from other users, promote users to manager status and edit the organisation’s details.

Joining an organisation

  1. Go to your dashboard (by logging in and clicking on your name in the top right hand corner of the screen).
  2. Under ‘My organisations’ select ‘Find an organisation’
  3. Enter the appropriate postcode for the organisation and click the ‘search’ button
  4. Your organisation should appear - select it by clicking on the radio button and then clicking on the ‘join’ button

You’ll then be taken back to your dashboard. You’ll need to wait until you are approved by a manager to access the organisation profile.

Managing organisation members (managers only)

If you are a manager you will have responsibility for managing the users in your organisation. This means:

  1. If a KnowHow NonProfit user asks to join your organisation you will be sent an email asking you to accept or reject their membership
  2. You can remove users from the organisation (assuming they are not a manager). You do this by going to the organisation’s page (via your dashboard) and clicking on the ‘edit’ button under ‘Members’.
  3. You can promote other users to manager status using the same form as above.

Leaving an organisation

If you no longer wish to be be included in an organisation's membership then you can leave via your dashboard. Simply go to your dashboard (you need to be logged in) by clicking on your name in the top right hand corner of the site. Under ‘My organisation’ click on the leave button next to the organisation.

If you are the only manager in an organisation and you choose to leave you will be asked to nominate a new manager to carry on the task.

If you are the only member of an organisation and you choose to leave the organisation’s details will be removed from the site.
