Hi Jacqeline
Thanks for sharing your story. Our staff team is very ethnically diverse, but not our board. What do you think is most important in attracting and keeping BME trustees? (We are a small national charity).
Thanks

Thanks for the question, Bessy. I would say it's important to make it clear that you want BME and you feel underrepresented in that area, and you should also say why you need BME(e.g. you feel they will bring another perspective). Using your network(and word of mouth) are also very useful, as is pointing out what people will get out of trusteeship. In terms of keeping them once they're on the Board, that's slightly more difficult to say. One issue that is raised by many BME colleagues is the timing and frequecny of meetings. It's important to be clear that all expenses will be reimbursed (including childcare costs) as again I have had dealings with charities where very few trustees claim expenses and those that cannot afford not to (if you see what I mean) are embarrassed and put off trusteeship.
