About MillcARTS
MillcARTS is a rebrand of an established Millcaster organisation - the Millcaster Arts Society (MAS) which was founded in 1995 by the ageing local actor and celebrity, Marcus. MAS started modestly as a Saturday Drama Club for young people between the ages of 11-18. It operated with volunteers and on a shoestring and became very popular, putting on two shows a year. After a few years the local council gave it a small grant and this combined with a few legacies enabled Marcus (who found all the administration too much) to appoint Simon as a General Manager. In 2008 Simon’s bid to the lottery unexpectedly was successful. MAS found itself in receipt of a £250,000 lottery grant to convert space in the Mill as an Arts Centre. In addition they were successful in receiving three year funding for an artistic director and appointed Jason.
Over the past year MAS changed its name to MillcARTS and plans to change its status to become a social enterprise.
Services
MillcARTS runs a wide programme of arts classes for the local community. It offers classes to all ages and abilities including drama, music, art and dance, tai-chi, writing and embroidery. The classes run in a local community hall and every year there is an annual event where the participants share their work. The classes are taught by a pool of freelance practitioners.
