This
is Jay, from Volunteer4Free Kenya. I am a coordinator for a
free (day) volunteer program based out of Nairobi. The primary focus
of our program (set to start February 2012) is teaching English to
needy children at a slum primary school. Also, volunteers will have an
opportunity to visit patients at the main hospital in the city (KNH),
where there are a number of activities to get involved with.
Finally,
Volunteer4Free volunteers will have a chance to help refugees from
various East African countries (e.g. Burundi, Rwanda, the Congo, etc.)
learn to speak English, with reading and writing as secondary
emphases. (Unlike with the primary school, the refugees are all adults
learning English as their second, third, or fourth language.)
Volunteer4Free Kenya can offer limited and basic accommodation for a
few volunteers at a time, though, depending on space, volunteers may
also need to source their own accommodation. (We suggest prospective
volunteers inquire about available accommodation space when writing
in. Alternatively, we can
help volunteers source nearby hotel or guest house accommodation within
the range of $10-$20 a night.)
We also provide
free (basic) food for all participants volunteering with our program.
(Individuals with more advanced dietary standards will need to look
after their own special food requirements, however.)
