Organisations are increasingly looking for cost-effectiive ways of developing their staff and volunteers. Mentoring is often one way of supporting and encouraging staff taking up new roles - either with a mentor within the organisation or external person.

Have you had or been a mentor? What advice would you give to others in a similar situation to get the most out of it?

When i first started working in the early eighties a time when IT was still expanding, I had a very good mentor who saw my strengths and steered my career through monthly lunch sessions. James was a very insightful individual and now I can say he really had excellent skills as a mentor. i picked up a lot of tips from him and have used them in my sessions with colleagues. It helps to have a senior person mentor as they tend to have encountered most situations before. Having a trusted realationship is fulfilling for both parties.
